A Dalek was materialising in the tunnel!
8
A Fugitive in the Future
Again the Dalek voice echoed through the darkness of the tunnel. ‘You are all enemies of the Daleks. Surrender at once or you will be exterminated!’
The Doctor realised the Dalek hadn’t seen him at all. It was addressing the guerillas. Somehow it must know they were in the tunnel. He turned and ran on at full pelt through the darkness, towards the tiny glowing point of light.
As he got nearer he saw that the light came from a little torch-like device, held by Anat. She and Boaz stood side-by-side, hands joined. Each held a pulsating black box in the other hand. The two time-machines were pulsating rhythmically and already, the shimmering effect was beginning to build up.
As the Doctor ran up to them Anat screamed, ‘Get back!’
Almost out of breath, the Doctor gasped, ‘There’s a Dalek... more Ogrons... in the tunnel behind me!’
The two guerillas turned. They saw the Dalek and the Ogrons bearing down on them. The Doctor pointed the other way. From that direction another Dalek, with Ogrons in support, was approaching. ‘You’re trapped,’ said the Doctor.
The shimmering effect of the time field grew even stronger. Anat yelled, ‘Get back! If you’re caught up in the time field you’ll be taken with us!’
The Doctor had no intention of being left behind... not with Daleks and Ogrons arriving from both sides. Instead of arguing, he wrapped his arms around Boaz in a determined bear-hug. The guerilla tried to break free, but the Doctor couldn’t be budged. It became clear that wherever Boaz was going, the Doctor was going with him.
As their pursuers converged upon than, the little group shimmered and faded from sight. Like Jo Grant before him, the Doctor found himself twisting and twirling in the Time Vortex. Since he was used to time travel, he was much less frightened than Jo had been. He couldn’t help thinking that time travel by this method was very different from time travel in the TARDIS. It was like comparing a trip in a luxury liner with going over Niagara Falls in a barrel.
Still holding grimly on to Boaz, the Doctor became aware that the Vortex was fading away. They were back in the real world. With a sudden jolt the Doctor found himself on firm ground. Letting go of Boaz, he looked round. They were still in a tunnel, but a very different one, modern in design.
The two guerillas were checking equipment, and stowing away their time machines. Anat said, ‘We warned you.’
The Doctor was looking around with interest. Only a single rail ran along this tunnel. They were in part of a monorail system. Probably built some time in the twenty-first century, and by now abandoned. Anat followed his glance. ‘This may come as a shock to you,’ she said gently,
‘but you’ve travelled in time.’
The Doctor gave her a quizzical look. ‘My dear young lady, I’m probably rather more familiar with time travel than you are.’
The guerillas started to move away.
